|hong kong trip|
after playing catch up like crazy (including waking up 4 hours earlier than the alarm clock), i finally have time to sit down and create a diptic collage from the pictures i took while in hong kong. it was a great trip, both from work and leisure side of things. i spent three days teaching for 5 hours each, which was not easy, but i also enjoyed all the pampering and fun activities my friend and i did outside campus. here's the highlight:
i stayed in a special room (called tomorrow's guestroom) at the teaching and research hotel of the school i was visiting. it's a luxury hotel managed by the school and they have few rooms that they design differently to try out different approaches for guest experience. the tomorrow's guestroom was equipped with hi-tech gadgets, including a smart toilet with a remote control (which reminds me of restrooms in japan), a fingerprint rug, live digital concierge, etc. i became a "guinea pig" by agreeing to stay there, but it was really fun and the special rate did not hurt either!
starting from the second day (i was too tired to do anything on the first day due to jet lag and late teaching schedule), my friend and i pampered ourselves. we had massages, hair treatment (i tried a purple tone highlight, which was ok), and beauty tips (i finally converted to shiseido, which i am going to post later). and we ate a lot! i was totally crazy with the special tea selections at the square restaurant (a michelin star restaurant worth trying when you are in hk).
flo joined me after i finished with my teaching schedule and we both arranged a few meetings with the university officials. jackie chan (yes, the actor!) is an honorary professor of the school and he has an office with a life size card board picture of him. we visited his office, took his business card and left ours, and then took a picture next to him :)

in terms of food, we tried many things, but we were not too adventurous to try unusual things. the most adventurous dish we had was a crispy roasted pigeon (which was good) with the head included in the presentation. flo wanted to order a snake head soup at one restaurant, but i had to stop him :(
on the last day, flo flew out earlier and i had a full day of shopping. my host friend and i bought the same pair of flats that we think scream hong kong! they are in black and gold, with a lace jacquard pattern and gold studs. :)
now i am back to grading papers and preparing exams.
